Toshiba's CEO, Hisao Tanaka, recently announced that the company will make a decision on where to build its new memory chip factory in the next fiscal year, which begins in April 2024. The choice of location is still under consideration, with overseas regions being one of the possible options. This move comes as demand for memory chips continues to outpace production capacity.
Just under four months ago, Toshiba opened a new NAND flash memory chip manufacturing plant in Yokkaichi. In an interview, Tanaka emphasized that the growing demand has already exceeded current production levels, and expanding capacity is essential. NAND flash chips are widely used in smartphones, tablets, and other consumer electronics.
When asked about potential locations, Tanaka mentioned that Samsung has already established a factory in Xi'an, China, while Hynix has also built a production facility there. However, he added that Samsung has also constructed a plant in the United States, suggesting that the decision isn't limited to any single region.
Toshiba aims to have the new facility operational by 2017, though it’s not ruling out the possibility of building the factory within Japan. The company remains focused on maintaining its competitive edge in the global semiconductor market.
In addition to its memory chip business, Tanaka also discussed Toshiba’s nuclear power division. He stated that if the Indian government can provide favorable insurance conditions for nuclear energy suppliers, the company would consider building a nuclear power plant in India.
On the medical front, Tanaka highlighted that Toshiba’s medical division is targeting revenue of 1 trillion yen (approximately $8.3 billion) by 2017. The unit may pursue acquisitions worth hundreds of billions of yen, with a focus on areas like MRI and CT scans, as well as disease prevention technologies. "Our core strengths lie in diagnostic and analytical products, but we are most likely to explore M&A opportunities in imaging and preventive healthcare," he said.
