Thomas Orland, deputy general manager of TCL's Poland factory, told reporters that the factory produced 1.2 million color TVs last year and will increase to 2 million this year. "From here, you can reach Germany in one day, France in two days, and Spain and Portugal in three or four days."
The Polish factory is the production base and warehousing base for TCL to supply color TV products to European countries, which can be directly distributed to retail stores. Thomas proudly said that in the past few years, the output of the Polish factory has risen rapidly, from 800,000 units in 2015 to 2 million units this year.
The reason behind this is, on the one hand, TCL's optimization of product innovation, quality and service; on the other hand, the help of China-Europe freight trains, "We started to use China-Europe freight trains in 2016, and 100% of China-Europe freight trains will be used in 2017 and 2018. The trains are 100% on time this year."
Thomas revealed that 95% of the parts and components of the Polish factory were shipped from China. Before, it took 40 days to ship from Shenzhen to Poland by sea. After the opening of the China-Europe freight train, it only takes 14 days to ship from Chengdu to Poland by train, which greatly shortens the transportation time and improves the market response speed.
With the rise of TCL's color TV sales in the European market this year, higher requirements have been placed on the Polish factory. In May of this year, TCL's Polish plant launched its fifth production line, bringing the plant's annual production capacity to 1.6 million units per shift. Thomas revealed that 50% of the output of the Polish factory is the TCL brand, 20% is the Thomson brand that TCL has acquired, and the rest is OEM.
Currently, the Polish factory has 350 employees in the off-season and 700 in the peak season. The monthly salary of Polish workers is about 8,000~9,000 RMB, not including social security. In order to control costs while increasing production, the Polish factory will introduce more automation equipment. Yicai saw at the scene that there are already three palletizing robots busy in the workshop of TCL's Polish factory.
In order to strengthen synergy, TCL Chengdu factory has also been incorporated into the overseas strategic business center in order to better cooperate with the Polish factory. In the Polish factory, the heads of supply chain, engineering, quality, and finance are dispatched from China, and the rest are local employees. Thomas said that he held video conferences with TCL China headquarters twice a week, and the two sides communicated smoothly.
Li Dongsheng, chairman and CEO of TCL Group, revealed to reporters during the 2018IFA (Berlin Consumer Electronics Show) that TCL will further expand its penetration in the European market. In terms of improving the business organization structure, TCL color TV sales have grown rapidly in Germany, France and the United Kingdom this year, and will also make efforts in other European countries.
The reporter was informed that, as an important step in its globalization strategy, TCL is increasing its layout in Europe, extending from production to research and development.
Yan Xiaolin, CTO of TCL Group, told reporters that TCL's technology strategy has three priorities: first, emerging display technology; second, artificial intelligence technology, represented by deep learning and machine learning technologies; third, industrial Internet and intelligent manufacturing. TCL European R&D Center mainly focuses on artificial intelligence technology of deep learning.
TCL European R&D Center signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Department of Information and Engineering of the University of Warsaw. "The European R&D Center plans to recruit 100 to 150 R&D personnel locally within two or three years. At the same time, we will also use the resources of the universities here. Moreover, we will not only use the resources of Poland, but also the R&D resources of Eastern Europe and Russia."
