Bosch Sensortec launches next-generation smart sensor hub series

Recently, Bosch Sensortec announced the launch of two members of the first echelon of the smart sensor hub series BHI260 and BHA260. These new sensors are optimized for 24/7 “Perpetual Messaging” sensor processing with ultra-low power consumption. With an integrated powerful sensor coprocessor and MEMS transmitter, the BHI260 and BHA260 can handle complex sensor processing tasks and data buffering without the need to wake up the main application processor or even run completely independently. Its low power consumption extends battery life in wearables, smart ear wear, AR/VR devices and smartphones.

To reduce time-to-market and reduce design effort for OEMs, Bosch Sensortec created an open development platform for these devices. This includes a fully integrated software framework, evaluation kit, and software development kit (SDK) in ROM.

Powerful CPU combined with precise inertial sensor

To enable more complex processing tasks such as automatic activity recognition and context awareness, the BHI260 and BHA260 feature "Fuser2" - a 32-bit floating point CPU with 256 KB of on-chip SRAM. In the ultra-efficient "long run" mode, the CPU consumes only 950μA at 20 MHz, while in the high-performance "turbo" mode, the CPU consumes only 2.8. mA. The processor's performance is up to 3.6 CoreMark/MHz.

The new Bosch Sensor Hub series includes the most advanced 16-bit MEMS sensor, the 6-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) on the BHI260 or the 3-axis accelerometer in the BHA260. These offer a wide range of connectivity, the BHI260 can connect up to 25 GPIOs, the BHA260 can connect up to 12 GPIOs, and support the integration of other sensor devices including GNSS and various localization systems.

The new generation of smart sensor hubs is compact and can be easily paired with small products such as smart ear wear and wearables. The BHI260 is available in a 44-pad LGA package measuring only 3.6 x 4.1 x 0.83 mm 3 . The BHA260 is available in a 22-pad LGA package measuring 2.7 x 2.6 x 0.8 mm 3 .

The BHI260 and BHA260 will be available for high volume applications in the third quarter of 2018.
