Video Encoder IC (ROHM) with built-in fog image processing

The semiconductor manufacturer ROHM Co., Ltd. has developed the industry's first video encoder IC "BU6521KV" with built-in fog image processing function for cameras equipped with camera modules such as surveillance cameras, home safety equipment, and car travel recorders. This new product, which has been sampling since September 2009 (sample price 1,200 yen / piece), will start in December 2009 and will be mass-produced on a monthly basis of 100,000 units. The preliminary process of the production process was carried out at the headquarters of ROHM Co., Ltd. (Kyoto City), and the later process was completed at ROHM ELECTRONICS PHILIPPINES INC. (Philippines).

In the situation of high security awareness, there is an increasing demand for image correction technology that can ensure visibility in severe weather conditions for surveillance cameras and in-vehicle cameras, especially for outdoor high-sensitivity requirements. ROHM is now equipped with a wide lineup of image processors and TV encoders for various image formats, especially the video encoder IC "BU6520KV" with AIE (Adaptive Image Enhancer is ROHM's original hardware image correction technology). In the backlight and the dark environment at night, the recognition of the camera image can be improved, and thus it is highly evaluated in devices such as surveillance cameras and car cameras. This time, the "BU6520KV" has been installed with real-time correction for blurry and unclear images such as fog or mist, and the industry's first fog image correction function video encoder IC "BU6521KV" has been developed.

ROHM's original fog image correction technology is to establish a luminance histogram distribution for the photographic input image. This information is used as a basis for contrast correction, and color correction is performed. Thanks to this technology, the contrast of the white mist image is greatly improved, and the disappearing color can be displayed, and the recognition is greatly improved. In addition, since it is necessary to determine the degree of "whiteness" with or without fog and fog, a function capable of automatically performing an appropriate correction process is installed, and it is possible to judge the change of the natural environment without using an external CPU or the like. With this function, even if the natural environment changes cause the fog concentration to change, the image can be continuously corrected to have no fog effect.

Further, in the field of surveillance cameras, vehicle cameras, and the like, in addition to requiring image recognition, real-time performance of image correction processing is required. If the fog image correction processing is performed by software, since the amount of calculation of the fog image correction is large, the correction processing can be performed only by the measurement frequency number fps (fps: frame per second). The number of images that can be processed every one second. However, "BU6521KV" uses the most suitable hardware for computational processing algorithms for high-speed processing, and the frame rate can reach 30fps.

ROHM will continue to develop products that meet the needs of users in the future by utilizing high image processing technology, and will further expand its product line.
