STMicroelectronics Introduces Standardized 3D Adaptive Video Stream Software Receiver

21ic News spans multiple electronic applications, the world's leading semiconductor supplier STMicroelectronics and the world's leading communication system, digital media and service research and development center Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute, HHI ) Launched the industry's first 3D video receiver based on the new MPEG-DASH standard, dynamic and adaptive HTTP streaming. This development is part of the European Content Recognition Intelligent Search and Streaming (COAST) project.

HTTP streaming technology enables high-quality video signals to be transmitted over the Internet to connected TVs, set-top boxes, and mobile terminal media playback devices. The Dynamic Adaptive HTTP (DASH) streaming standard recently announced by the 3GPP and MPEG Working Group aims to simplify the deployment of broadband video streams over different network infrastructures and end devices, introducing an open, standardized solution to replace the market. Many HTTP streaming protocols that are exclusive to some companies. DASH specifies the format for content preparation and a fast and efficient content adaptation tool. The standard supports trick mode, multi-language subtitles and channels, ad insertion and digital rights management technology to protect content, compatible with standard web servers and video buffering technology.

This ST-HHI DASH-based software video receiver uses sophisticated and advanced algorithms to automatically select the code stream transmission rate, video resolution and file format based on the actual network conditions, terminal device functions and user-priority customization settings. The video stream is delivered to the player without interruption, providing the best visual experience for the consumer. By automatically adjusting the video streaming rate, the software automatically corrects the effects of bandwidth fluctuations on image quality, while automatically selecting video file formats based on the type of terminal device, allowing consumers to view 3D content on standard 2D display devices.

The ST-HHI 3D adaptive streaming environment consists of a video server, a personal computer with a 3D display and a thin client terminal with a 2D display. The 3D video stream is generated on one remote server and transmitted to two terminal devices through the IP protocol, and the 3D video stream is automatically converted into 2D content on the thin client terminal device. The product prototype implements DASH technology through the GStreamer development environment. GStreamer is a popular multimedia development architecture for PCs and embedded platforms that supports multiple media formats and streaming protocols.

Amedeo Zuccaro, Director of Security and Multimedia Systems R&D Center, Advanced Systems Technology, STMicroelectronics, said: "DASH can efficiently and easily transfer video-on-demand or live video streams over any existing network infrastructure to any connected device without any special With the cooperation with HHI, we became the first chip manufacturer to integrate DASH adaptive video streaming technology inside the chip."

Dr. Thomas Schierl, Director of Multimedia Communications Products at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute in Germany, said: "From the laboratory and the trial environment to the market, everyone can now enjoy 3D video technology. We are very happy to be able to Semiconductors collaborate to develop next-generation media devices to embrace the advent of 3D stereo and multi-view video content."
