Electronic view: 2014 will usher in a big outbreak of wearable devices

Advances in technology have brought about an innovative experience. Companies and operators in the electronics industry have brought a rich meal to consumers over the years, and new technologies and products have emerged. In the past 2013, new and old concepts such as 64bit processors, 4K HD, OLED screens, wearable devices, etc. have made great strides, especially in the beginning of 2014, CES shines. Where will the entire consumer electronics market be led by terminal manufacturers? How will major semiconductor manufacturers adapt and guide the market?

Where will the mobile processor go?

Since the birth of the smart phone, major manufacturers have carried out an unprecedented fierce competition on the hardware, especially in dealing with the area. From the development of single-core, dual-core and quad-core to the current eight-core, it took only six years. The pace of development has grown much faster than the PCs with decades of history. In the hope that the industry will continue to compete on the processor, the mobile phone revolutionary Apple launched its latest mobile phone processor A7 in 2013. As the first 64bit processor on the mobile side, Apple once again walked in In front of the industry, a "64bit hot" in the industry has been set off.

After Apple introduced the A7, Qualcomm also invested in related research and development.

According to a Qualcomm employee who did not want to be named, "Apple's 64-bit chip is at the heart of us. Not only us, but everyone, really. We are dumbfounded, dizzy, unguarded (slack-jawed, and stunned, And unprepared) (64-bit and 32-bit) There is no big difference in performance now, because most of the current software can't benefit from it, but it looks like it's bigger than 32, now everyone wants ( 64 bit)."

The employee of Qualcomm further revealed: "The Qualcomm 64-bit roadmap is far from comparable to Apple, because everyone thinks it is not that important. The evolution from 32 to 64 should be safe. Of course. It’s tempting and the future, but it’s really meaningless in terms of the status quo.”

Even so, Qualcomm recently launched its first 64-bit processor, the Opteron 410 MSM8916. Although this is just a low-end chip based on the ARM Cortex-A53 architecture. But this is also a good start. Compared to Apple's need to design a chip each year, Qualcomm needs a complete product line to meet the high-end and low-end markets, so there is a longer way for Qualcomm.

Another chip maker, Samsung, followed Apple's footsteps to propose that the next generation of Exynos will be 64. According to Yan Nanxing, President of Samsung's System LSI Division:

Samsung will use the "two-step" strategy to develop 64-bit processors. First, Samsung will develop 64-bit chips with reference to ARM's design, that is, launch the Exynos 6 series; then, optimize the design according to the actual situation, that is, Exynos S series.

Samsung also hinted that future mobile devices will be configured with the same memory as a PC, which also requires a 64-bit processor. After all, more than 4GB of memory must be supported by a 64-bit processor. In most cases, 32-bit. The chip is unable to provide good support for large-capacity memory.

And another wireless giant Broadcom, although not very famous in the field of mobile processors, but this time also took the lead of 64-bit processors, homeopathic 64-bit processors.

Broadcom said that the new processor is also derived from the ARMv8 64-bit architecture, but it is not used to take the architecture, but similar to Apple and Qualcomm, based on the original instruction set, developed by itself, super-scalar out-of-order execution architecture, four launches four Thread, known as having "the best CPU core", "best hardware accelerator", "smart power management".

Broadcom plans to use TSMC's 16nm FinFET three-dimensional transistor process, which means it will not be seen until 2015, because the process is scheduled for mass production in early 2015.

But waiting will be worth it. With advanced technology, the main frequency can reach above 3GHz, and the performance is naturally imaginable.

In the end, Broadcom pointed out that this processor is mainly for wireless, storage, network, and security (the total value of the market is 3 billion US dollars), so it is a pity that there is basically no such thing in smartphones and tablets.

In this wave, the efforts of domestic chip manufacturers can not be ignored.

Well-known domestic manufacturers, Zhuhai Quanzhi announced that it will launch A9X at the end of 2015, which indicates that it will also enter the 64-bit era, using the Cortex-A53/A57, suspected to be a dual-architecture hybrid, and claiming that the GPU is now four times .

The A9X will be manufactured using TSMC's new process, but whether it is 20nm or more advanced 16nm FinFET has not been determined. The former will be mass-produced early next year, and the latter will be abundant in time after the beginning of the year.

In the age of 64 people, what kind of experience will be brought to us, we are not yet known. What changes will Apple bring to the mobile phone industry? let us wait and see.
