5G extends mobile networks and technologies to a wider range of industries. Realizing such a world through 5G interconnection is very complicated. You need a new type of mobile network to meet a wide range of expanding connectivity options such as high throughput and low latency, high security and low power, high reliability and deep coverage. The 5G platform requires a high degree of flexibility and sensitivity to accurately deploy the right technology, spectrum and bandwidth for each application and to support efficient reuse of future-oriented services and terminal types.

You also need to make the most of every spectrum – across multiple available spectrum disciplines and bands – from low-frequency bands below 1 GHz to IF bands from 1 GHz to 6 GHz to high-frequency bands called millimeter waves. You need to support the terminal to work on both the licensed spectrum and the shared spectrum. You need to connect in new ways, such as end-to-end, and you need a new end-to-end solution.

This will require us to achieve new technological innovations based on existing accumulations. There is no single 5G technology component and no 5G black horse. Conversely, 5G will take advantage of many different technological innovations, including high-bandwidth low-latency design, spectrum sharing technology, advanced antenna technology, channel coding technology, and massive MIMO.

Qualcomm is an invention company. Over the years we have been working on the development of these 5G basic technologies – just as we have led many of the leading edge technologies of 3G and 4G. Of course, such a change does not happen overnight, but 5G is not as far away as you might think. Pre-5G technology is currently undergoing field testing and testing, and 3GPP standardization is steadily advancing to create the first 5G blueprint for deployment in 2019 (if not earlier).
