Amit Singh, Deputy Director of Google Operations: Daily VR needs have surfaced but VR still needs to be more social

On November 8, 2017, Google has invested heavily in virtual reality to bring the Daydream VR headset to the market. Users simply plug in a smartphone to launch a VR world. But despite this, Amit Singh, deputy director of Google's virtual reality business and operations, is honest and we still need to overcome certain obstacles.

At a global network summit in Lisbon, Portugal, Singh explained: “A lot of people have reported that one of the major obstacles to virtual reality is that it is still such an independent experience that virtual reality can be isolated.”

But Singh added: "However, I think there is a solution. We have introduced some features, such as allowing Day Dream users to watch YouTube videos with friends, or live streaming VR experiences on TV via ChromeCast, so that the user's family can also See what they are going through, but it is clear that if VR is to become a more mainstream device, it needs to become a more social experience."

When asked how to make people stop using VR as a new technology, Singh said that the need for daily VR experiences has already emerged.

He said: "I wouldn't say that the demand for everyday VR experiences is very large. They need to become more engaging to match this demand. We recently created a VR video series with Vogue that you can get daily from your supermodel closet. My fashion proposal is that my daughter likes it very much and spends five minutes a day. She doesn't like games or technology, so obviously this is the level of attraction we need to target."
