Substrate manufacturer Rubicon Technology said Samsung is likely to increase the diameter of the wafer to compensate for the shortcomings in the 2-inch market. South Korea's Samsung Electronics is studying a plan that has a huge impact on the LED industry and will enter the 6-inch Led wafer manufacturing sector next year.
“About Samsung, I think it will start producing 6-inch wafers in 2009, which is a positive news for us,†said Ruba CEO Raja Parvez. “We have successfully produced 6-inch sapphire substrates. It is expected to be a year faster."
Parvez also said that an epitaxial equipment supplier had contacted Rubicon and wanted to get a sample of an 8-inch sapphire substrate. They may want to test larger-sized epitaxial devices, which seems to confirm the CEO's claim that the market has a positive sign of shifting to large size. This sign has made Rubicon excited, as the current global consumer demand slows, the 2-inch sapphire substrate is shrinking.
Rubicon predicts that its sales will fall by about 25% in the third or fourth quarter of this year, and Parvez estimates that the fourth quarter's highest revenue is no more than $85 million. Despite the recession, it can remain profitable every quarter. The decline is due to substrate manufacturers having delayed orders of approximately $700 to 2009, of which $2.5 million relates to 2.5-inch LED substrates and $4.3 million relates to silicon sapphire RF applications.
Parvez pointed out that producers of LEDs that supply handheld devices and small displays are struggling in the current economic environment. Regrettably, these companies are still using 2-inch substrates, and larger LED substrates are expected to have greater development potential.
