Analysis and comparison of two LED backlight driving schemes

Ultra-thin, high-definition, energy-saving, and environmental protection are the highlights of LCD TVs that use LED backlights better than CCFL backlights. Over time, LED-backlit LCD TVs have gained recognition, and its era has arrived. Since September last year, LED LCD TVs have occupied more than 11% of the LCD market in just a few months. It is predicted that LCD TVs with CCFL backlights will be completely replaced within 3 years.

At the same time, with the continuous expansion of the market, LED backlight drive technology is also becoming more mature, and backlight drive solutions are also more and more, but it is not changing. In the field of LCD TV, the mainstream solution of LED backlight drive is still inductor boost. The DC/DC boost converter is coupled to a constant current control circuit (shown in Figure 1). The two drive schemes to be compared in this paper are also the AP3039+AP3608E (Scheme 1) and AP3608 single-chip solutions (Scheme 2).

As can be seen from Table 1, the AP3068 is functionally equivalent to the integration of an AP3039 and an AP3608E.
