Qualcomm will invest nearly $1 billion in Taiwan to build a panel factory

A few days ago, Taiwan’s economic management department said in a statement that Qualcomm decided to set up a new plant in Hsinchu, Taiwan to meet the growing demand for new portable devices such as e-readers. Qualcomm's investment will help upgrade Taiwan's panel technology and create employment opportunities. Taiwan already has Chi Mei and AUO, the world's third and fourth largest LCD panel makers.

It is reported that Qualcomm and Taiwan are setting up a joint venture company, Sollink, about two years ago to manufacture mobile phone display panels using Mirasol technology. Qualcomm will invest nearly $1 billion in Taiwan to build a panel factory this year, using power-saving Mirasol technology to produce small and medium-sized panels. Analysts say Mirasol and other similar displays are suitable for mobile devices such as mobile phones, navigation devices and e-readers.
