Huawei will become the danger that the flag bearer of the 5G revolution will encounter on the 5G road.

5G has become a hot spot for MWC this year. Some people say that 5G may be slower on the road, but it will never be late. The United States is not willing to open its doors for Huawei, but Huawei is still expected to become the standard bearer of the 5G revolution.

On February 27th, after a year of painstaking testing, wireless operators finally finalized the deadline, which is the deadline for large-scale deployment of 5G. From the United States to Asia, many companies are ready to commercialize 5G, which will be implemented as soon as this year. At this year's MWC, 5G became a hot spot.

Looking at the timetable alone is really exciting and exciting, but the problems behind it cannot be ignored. Looking forward to the upcoming 5G services this year, most of them are far from the goals set by operators. What is the goal? Make your device's wireless connection as good as wired broadband. Take a look at the plans of AT&T, Verizon, Australia's Optus Pte. Ltd. and Finland's Elisa Oyj. The scale of the service is very small, or only one element of the 5G engineering standard, which is being developed and not yet completed.

The plan is wonderful but slower

The "fixed-line wireless" service that will be launched this year is really good. It uses an outdoor antenna to project broadband signals into the home without the need for a cable. But at the beginning, the internet speed was not very fast.

Why is the development speed so slow? Mainly the infrastructure is dragging its legs. Unlike previous network upgrades, 5G requires the installation of a large number of cellular radio antennas that are not yet installed. Once installed, cable companies can take advantage of the connection to the telephone pole, and even at this point, they still have to spend time sending new radio signals to the streets of the city.

Australia, China, Finland, Japan, and South Korea are testing 5G services, and operators are arguing that 5G services will be launched in 2019. But a bright plan is actually a little far from reality.

Ted Rappaport, a professor at New York University's Tandon School of Engineering, believes that if 5G equipment is to be truly practical, equipment manufacturers will have to spend time "sowing to the market." Only when the mobile phone and other devices are equipped with compatible chips, "fixed-line wireless" can be realized.

Michael Murphy, Nokia's North American technology director, said that it is difficult to predict which types of devices will use 5G technology before the cost of the chip drops. In addition, he also stressed that there will be any killer application after the emergence of 5G, we still don't know.

Verizon started early. It first tested 5G services in 11 cities in the United States, and then prepared to launch 5G services in Sacramento, California. But Verizon also admits that real mobile services will take years to promote. AT&T said that fixed-line and mobile 5G services will be launched before 2018. The initial use of services will be mobile hotspots, such as connecting to laptops.

Huawei will become the flag bearer of the 5G revolution. The dangers that will be encountered on the 5G road.

Huawei's location

Although the United States is not willing to open its doors to Huawei, Huawei has already cooperated with large operators in Europe and Asia and is expected to become the standard bearer of the 5G revolution.

China will become the world's largest 5G market, and Huawei has a dominant position in China. At the same time, Huawei is still expanding to other parts of the world. In some lucrative markets, Huawei is competing with Ericsson and Nokia. Some markets have always been American allies.

Until now, the 5G network is still in beta, using a denser array of small antennas and clouds to transmit data at speeds of 50 or even 100 times faster than 4G. It may take another year to build a 5G network, but Huawei has already begun to take action and signed 25 memorandums of understanding with operators to test 5G equipment. A memorandum of understanding may result in a commercial contract. The operators that cooperate with Huawei include British BT, Canadian Bell, French Orange, German Deutsche Telekom, and Vodafone.

Despite this, Huawei is still slower than Ericsson. Ericsson has signed 38 memos and Nokia signed 31. The above data only counts public transactions, and some undisclosed transactions are not included.

It doesn't matter, Huawei has long established a close cooperative relationship with operators, which can help Huawei gain an advantage. As of 2016, there are 537 4G networks worldwide, and Huawei provides equipment to more than half of the networks. Among the 90 4.5G networks in the world, 59 also use Huawei equipment.

Dell'Oro analyst Stefan Pongratz said: "The existing network business is a very important part, because operators are eager to keep the old network... If you use the same supplier's products, you can save a lot of money."

In China, Huawei also has great advantages. For example, one-third of China Mobile's 5G network contract will be handed over to Huawei, and one-third will be handed over to ZTE, and the rest will allow foreign companies to compete.

According to data provided by GSMA, by 2025, 1.2 billion people worldwide will use 5G networks, and one third of them will come from China.

Huawei's risk

Is there no risk ahead of Huawei? no. Like competitors, Huawei has invested huge sums of money to research 5G network technology, but when will operators accept new technologies? no promises.

Some financially-rich operators are very patient. They hope to wait until there are a large number of consumers and a large number of enterprises to invest and promote 5G. These things are not Huawei's. Some emerging markets are still not popular with 4G, and they want to use 5G, at least 10 years later.

Watching from the annual camp, Huawei is three times the size of Nokia and Ericsson. Last year, Huawei received $92 billion in revenue, half of which came from China. In the last quarter, it sold 32% of mobile wireless access devices (including antennas and base stations), Ericsson accounted for 30%, and Nokia accounted for 25%.

In recent years, due to the decline in profits, Ericsson has been under great pressure and forced to cut costs. Nokia is also not very good. It is busy integrating the acquired business.

Nokia has said that it is confident in its 5G product portfolio, which provides both software and services. Ericsson said that the company has been working with customers for a long time. It has advanced 5G patented technology and will have the upper hand in competition. The Ericsson spokesperson also said: "Our customers are all looking at 5G."

Huawei also signed non-binding memoranda with some large telecom operators from South Korea, Japan, Australia, Italy, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. Let's put the commercial interests aside. These agreements tell us that many countries, although they are allies with the United States, have not regarded Washington's security concerns as one thing.

The United States accused Huawei of insecure equipment. Huawei spokesperson responded: "In 170 countries around the world, Huawei products are trusted by the government and customers. Compared with other communication providers, Huawei's products have no higher cyber security risks. ”

Bruce Rodin, vice president of Bell's wireless network in Canada, revealed that their company has been hiring external network security companies to rigorously test Huawei products, and found no problems. Bruce Rodin said: "We have been testing for nearly 10 years and have not seen any malicious code or backdoors." He believes that the United States is only doing this to protect its own businesses. Bruce Rodin also said: "It’s just a business act, they want to protect their industry."

Deutsche Telekom also said that the company and Huawei have cooperated at various levels and found no security risks. A spokesperson for Deutsche Telekom said: "The hardware is manufactured according to the requirements of Deutsche Telekom and checked by our security department." Orange said that they treat Huawei as any other supplier.
