Inmates can "return" to their family through this VR app

Most VR users engage with the technology for entertainment—watching videos, playing games, or exploring virtual worlds. However, for some, VR serves a deeper purpose: connecting people in meaningful ways. Chilean content creator Catalina Alarcón has taken this concept to a new level with her project "Home" (in Spanish, *Volver a casa*), which allows prison inmates to experience a virtual return to their homes through immersive technology. Alarcón partnered with 12 women at the St. Joaquin Women’s Prison for a six-month documentary workshop. Before the project began, these women had only seen footage shot by other filmmakers from Iberian American producers. The introduction of VR came as a final and powerful event. Alarcón brought panoramic cameras to the families of the participants, giving them the chance to film personal moments—whether it was watching a child ride a bike or simply walking around their home. “I explained the project to every family involved,” Alarcón told Emol. “We sent panorama cameras to their homes so they could record what they wanted to share with their loved ones. Their support made it possible for us to continue this work.” The first time the prisoners experienced the VR film, the atmosphere was intense. “Everyone was very nervous,” Alarcón recalled. “We were careful because we knew how much it meant to them to see their families again. The guards were also cautious about using the Gear VR headsets. I was anxious too, worried about how strong an emotional impact it might have on them.” This initiative aims to bridge the emotional gap between incarcerated individuals and their families. Prisons were originally designed to isolate offenders as a form of punishment, making reintegration into society difficult, especially for those serving long sentences. By offering a glimpse of home, Alarcón hopes to provide a sense of connection and hope. Looking ahead, if funding allows, Alarcón plans to expand the "Home" project to more prisons across Chile next year. Her goal is not just to entertain but to remind people that even behind bars, the human need for love, belonging, and memory remains strong.

All-in-one Energy Storage System

An energy storage system (ESS) is a device or set of devices used to store energy for later use. ESSs can store energy in various forms, including chemical, mechanical, thermal, and electrical energy. The stored energy can be used to power homes, buildings, or vehicles, or to supplement the power grid during periods of high demand.

Energy Storage System

ESSs are becoming increasingly important as renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power become more popular. These sources of energy are intermittent, meaning they only produce electricity when the sun is shining or the wind is blowing. ESSs can help to smooth out these fluctuations in energy production and make renewable energy more reliable and cost-effective.

Modular LiFePO4 Battery System

ESS is an integrated battery system that stores your solar energy for backup protection, so when the grid goes down your power stays on. Your system detects outages and automatically recharges with sunlight to keep your appliances running for days.GOOTU offers a modular, flexible design and can be easily customized to meet diverse customer needs.
