Most VR users engage with the technology for entertainment—watching videos, playing games, or exploring virtual worlds. However, for some, VR serves a deeper purpose: bridging emotional gaps and bringing people closer. In Chile, filmmaker Catalina Alarcón has taken this concept further by launching a project called *Home* (Spanish: *Volver a casa*), which allows prison inmates to experience a virtual return to their families through immersive technology.
Alarcón partnered with 12 women at the St. Joaquin Women’s Prison for a six-month documentary workshop. Before introducing VR, the participants had only seen footage shot by other producers from Iberian American countries. The final event of the workshop introduced them to VR for the first time. Alarcón brought in panoramic cameras for family members, giving them the chance to record personal moments—whether it was watching a child ride a bike or simply walking around their home.
“I explained the project to each family,†Alarcón told Emol. “We sent panoramic cameras to them so they could express what they wanted to say to their loved ones. They could share anything they felt was important. Their support made it possible for us to continue this project.â€
During the first VR screening, the atmosphere was intense. Alarcón recalls that the prisoners were visibly nervous, knowing they would see their families. The prison guards were also cautious, especially with the Gear VR headsets. Alarcón herself was anxious, fearing the emotional impact on the participants.
The original design of prisons often focuses on isolation as punishment, making reintegration into society difficult, especially for those serving long sentences. Through *Home*, Alarcón aims to offer a glimpse of normalcy and connection, helping prisoners maintain emotional ties with their families.
Looking ahead, if funding permits, Alarcón plans to expand the project to more prisons across Chile. Her vision is not just about using technology—it’s about using it to heal, connect, and give hope.
