On August 30th, two sets of Jiuquan-developed converter transformers for the China Xidian-Hunan ±800kV UHV DC transmission project, specifically the ZZDFPZ-412300/750-400 model, successfully passed all tests on the first attempt. All performance metrics met or exceeded national standards and technical agreements, achieving an international leading level. This marks a major milestone as these are the largest domestically produced converter transformers on the grid side at 750kV in China.
The Jiuquan-Hunan ±800kV UHV DC transmission project was designed to support the development of the Jiuquan Wind Power Base and meet the growing electricity demand in Hunan. It plays a crucial role in promoting clean energy utilization, optimizing coal resource distribution, and transforming regional resource advantages into economic benefits. The project is vital for advancing a low-carbon economy and supporting the country's broader energy strategy.
In August 2015, China Xidian secured the contract to supply seven sets of ±400kV and seven sets of ±200kV converter transformers for this key national project. These were the first converter transformers of 750kV and ±400kV (±200kV) voltage levels that Xidian accepted on the grid side, and they represent the largest capacity of such equipment produced domestically.
Xidian West, a subsidiary of China Xidian responsible for the development, placed high importance on this national key project. They meticulously prepared the production quality and progress assurance plan, defined strict inspection requirements for critical control points, and laid a solid foundation for smooth equipment manufacturing.
As one of the most advanced voltage levels in UHV DC engineering, the ±800kV system offers excellent economic efficiency and high technical reliability. It is expected to become the primary voltage level for China’s DC transmission network, especially for connecting to the 750kV AC system. The technology will be widely applied in future projects such as ±800kV and even ±1100kV DC transmission systems, offering significant market potential and long-term growth opportunities.
