China's third-generation semiconductor industry is expected to lead the world

In recent years, the 14th China International Semiconductor Lighting Forum and the 2017 International Third Generation Semiconductor Forum took place in Beijing. These two major international events were supported by the Shunyi District Government of Beijing, the China Advanced Semiconductor Alliance (CASA), and the National Semiconductor Lighting Engineering R&D and Industry Alliance (CSA). Industry experts at the forum highlighted that China's semiconductor lighting sector has transitioned from "taking the lead" to "leading the way," moving steadily toward becoming a global industrial powerhouse. Additionally, China's third-generation semiconductor applications are showing strong foundational advantages, with innovation in this field now ripe for significant growth. During the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period, the government intensified efforts in research, development, and promotion of high-efficiency lighting products through macro-level guidance, technological innovation, policy improvements, energy-saving reforms, and application demonstrations. Xu Qiang, Director of the National Energy Conservation Center under the National Development and Reform Commission, emphasized that the commission, in collaboration with multiple ministries, issued key documents such as the "Opinions on the Development of Semiconductor Lighting Energy-Saving Industry" and the "Semiconductor Lighting Energy-Saving Industry Plan." These initiatives have significantly boosted energy efficiency and driven the growth of the semiconductor industry. According to data, over 600,000 general lighting incandescent bulbs have been phased out in China, with their market share dropping below 5%. Through the Huimin project, more than 780 million LED and high-efficiency lighting products have been promoted. In 2016, the industry's output value reached 520 billion yuan, reflecting a 23% increase from the previous year. The number of listed companies focused on LED core business grew from just 2 in 2010 to 35 today. As a result, China has become the world's largest producer, consumer, and exporter of semiconductor lighting products. Semiconductor lighting marks only the first successful application of third-generation semiconductor materials. According to reports, these materials are essential for next-generation power electronics, mobile communications, and optoelectronics. They are expected to drive disruptive technological changes in energy, transportation, and communication sectors, further supporting green and sustainable industrial development. Currently, China’s third-generation semiconductors are included in one of the seven key directions of the 2030 National New Materials Major Project. The industry is at a crucial stage of R&D and industrialization. Compared to silicon-based semiconductors, the global third-generation semiconductor industry is still in its early stages, and China has a massive domestic demand. It is anticipated that the entire innovation chain will eventually reach the world’s advanced level. Cao Jianlin, Chairman of the International Semiconductor Lighting Alliance and former Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, noted that semiconductor lighting has already established a leading position in the optoelectronics field, while power electronics and microwave radio frequency industries are at a global level. He reiterated that China’s third-generation semiconductor applications have solid foundational advantages, and the time is right for substantial innovation in this area. Analysts suggest that global semiconductor giants have not yet formed patent, standard, or scale monopolies. Domestically, China has made rapid progress in precision processing technology and supporting capabilities, enabling the development and gradual dominance of third-generation semiconductor equipment. With the need for industrial upgrading, enthusiasm for development remains high. China's rapid advancements in the LED sector have also laid a strong foundation for the growth of third-generation semiconductors. It is worth noting that the global semiconductor lighting industry is currently undergoing a critical phase marked by multiple forces driving development. The industrial structure is continuously adjusting, bringing both challenges and opportunities. Sanan Optoelectronics, the first LED-listed company in China, has seen steady growth thanks to the strength of the capital market. This has provided a solid foundation for the development of third-generation semiconductors. However, according to the company’s management, the R&D threshold for third-generation semiconductors is relatively high, requiring significant capital investment. Additionally, there is still a pressing need for skilled personnel capable of large-scale production and manufacturing. These challenges are common across domestic firms and must be overcome for long-term success. Looking ahead, China aims to achieve world-leading positions in third-generation semiconductor technology by 2025, with the industry size reaching the top globally. By 2030, the entire industry chain is expected to reach international advanced levels, with core device localization rates exceeding 70%. Cao Jianlin proposed that regional strengths should be leveraged, with differentiated layouts, full-chain design, and integrated implementation to avoid redundant investments and unhealthy competition. He also suggested building a collaborative development model through alliances, combining R&D and industrial capital for joint innovation, focusing on international cooperation, and deeply integrating global resources.
