Texas Instruments Introduces the Industry's Most Powerful Base Station SoC

-Fully meet the needs of manufacturers and operators for 4G technology

Beijing, November 10, 2010-A few days ago, Texas Instruments (TI) announced the launch of the industry ’s first wireless base station system-on-chip (SoC) that can fully meet the demand for wireless data surges and has a 4G performance level. In a market environment that strives to increase network capacity through low-cost methods, it helps them always plan for the surge in user data. The TMS320TCI6616 SoC has been built on the wireless data engine since its design. It is based on TI's new TMS320C66x digital signal processor (DSP) and KeyStone multi-core architecture, and has a higher level than any 3G / 4G SoC on the market Twice the performance. In addition, the TCI6616 can greatly improve the performance of the industry's first multi-core DSP capable of processing fixed-point and floating-point math operations simultaneously. This highly innovative and powerful feature can significantly simplify the software design of wireless base stations.

To help customers develop more robust multi-core base stations, allowing operators to optimize their spectrum, financial and network resources, TI has developed a TCI6616 SoC that integrates three important elements: PHY technology with proven performance, automatic data Packet processing engine, and programmable DSP that can fully meet the requirements of multiple cores.

The TI PHY implemented as a configurable coprocessor enables software-defined radio (SDR) solutions to help operators smoothly upgrade to emerging standards without the need for external components. The automatic packet processing function of the TCI6616 can manage packets from both the core and the radio broadcast network. It can not only reduce the workload of packet processing, but also release corresponding resources to support algorithms that can improve spectrum efficiency. The automatic calculation of the packet coprocessor simplifies the design, and at the same time it can significantly reduce costs for developers. In summary, these configurable coprocessors for all major wireless standards can achieve performance equivalent to more than 250 DSPs.

The TCI6616 uses TI's latest C66x DSP core to achieve unprecedented programmable performance. As shown in the independent BDTI benchmark test, its processing performance is more than 5 times higher than any other DSP core. The four C66x cores in the multi-core TCI6616 provide the performance required to implement custom IP, and base station developers can differentiate products based on this. TI's PHY technology, packet coprocessor, and multiple DSP cores work together to provide developers with a very powerful computing SoC that is ideal for meeting the needs of 4G networks.

Brian Glinsman, general manager of TI ’s communications infrastructure business, pointed out: “The launch of our TCI6616 SoC will shock the entire industry, because only our base station technology on the market can effectively solve the various problems faced by operators. We have made significant progress in terms of cost performance or innovation. With such a powerful base station solution, manufacturers and operators will be able to obtain advanced technologies from TI that can tap the huge potential of 4G. "

Main features and advantages:

The first C66x SoC based on the universal Keystone multi-core architecture supports scalability and portability, which not only meets the different needs of macro cells to small cells, but also reduces product development costs;
The only PHY coprocessor solution that supports all 3G and 4G standards, including support for WCDMA chip rate and LTE bit rate, can significantly simplify the upgrade from 3G to 4G (no FPGA / ASIC required);
The new and innovative C66x core also integrates unmatched fixed-point and floating-point support, enabling developers to more efficiently implement advanced floating-point algorithms with minimal design and conversion work;
High-performance network coprocessor can provide L2 and transmission acceleration functions for all wireless base station standards, thereby automating the processing of core and radio broadcast network packets;
Multicore Navigator and Open Navigator programming interface can provide simple effects similar to single core for multi-core SoC;
Green Power technology, including intelligent reflection, memory retention, and dynamic power management, can minimize base station power consumption;
The high-performance 40nm process technology ensures robust programmable performance and can bring unprecedented high value to base station developers.
