He revealed that the unmanned field is the largest project Baidu is currently investing in. It has invested tens of billions of dollars so far, far exceeding the previous investment of 20 billion yuan for Baidu.
In July 2014, Baidu confirmed for the first time that it launched the “Baidu Driverless Car†R&D program. On December 10, 2015, Baidu announced that its driverless car was the first in China to achieve fully automatic driving in mixed road conditions of cities, loops and highways. Wang Jin said that Baidu’s biggest capital investment project today is driverless cars. "I can't reveal Baidu's unmanned numbers, but it's far more than you think." Previously, Baidu had proposed a three-year commercialization of unmanned vehicles and a five-year mass production plan. Cost is the key to whether an unmanned vehicle can finally be successfully commercialized. The cost of the Baidu unmanned vehicle that was tested last year was extremely high, and only one vehicle-mounted radar cost 700,000 yuan.
Wang Jin said that Baidu is working with partners and hopes to reduce the vehicle radar to less than 20,000 yuan within three to five years. Wang Jin said that when the unmanned vehicles are officially commercialized, the depreciation and usage fees are added up compared with the manual driving. The integrated price of the unmanned vehicles is only between one-fifth and one-third of the latter.
Wang Jin revealed that Baidu will select ten of the most representative cities nationwide as pilot cities for Baidu unmanned vehicles.
