Keysight Technologies has launched its first PXI Express source/measurement unit, the M9111A, designed to support the testing and verification of next-generation power amplifiers and front-end modules used in mobile devices and wireless communication systems.
The M9111A is a high-speed SMU that can change voltage, stabilize, and measure microampere currents in just 1 millisecond. Compared to Keysight's previous standalone SMUs, this PXIe-based unit is 20 times faster and more compact, making it ideal for modern test environments.

Power amplifiers often generate fast pulse currents, which can be challenging for traditional test equipment. However, the M9111A delivers industry-leading transient performance, effectively suppressing voltage sags caused by pulsed loads and quickly returning to the set voltage level after each pulse.
Unlike conventional SMUs that may become unstable under dynamic load conditions, the M9111A ensures consistent output stability, eliminating concerns about power supply interference during measurements. Its bumpless operation guarantees the safety of the device under test when changing output ranges or measurement settings. Even with high capacitance, the output remains stable, protecting the device from damage.
This single-slot, two-quadrant PXIe SMU module provides up to 18W of power and supports multiple operating modes, such as 13 V at ±1 A or 6 V at ±3 A. Functionally, the M9111A serves as both a voltage and current source, as well as an ammeter and voltmeter. Key measurement capabilities include:
- Fast settling time for measuring rapid voltage changes
- Quick recovery from abrupt changes in pulse current, minimizing voltage drop
- Accurate and efficient low-current measurements, such as leakage current detection
The M9111A is part of Keysight’s RF power amplifier and front-end module reference solution, enabling quick and comprehensive characterization of next-gen power amplifier modules. It supports measurements like S-parameters, demodulation, power, adjacent channel power, and harmonic distortion.
